New Leaf

How Happy the Trees Must Be

Springtime! A time of renewal! The trees birth new leaves, gradually the evenings have more daylight, and the birds start singing early in the morning as they anticipate the dawn. A quote in my Stepping Stones booklet aptly introduces the section on 'Faith': "Faith is the bird that feels the light and sings while the dawn is still dark." (Rabindranath Tagore). We also see more of our neighbours as they wash their cars and contemplate garden planting.

The idea for this Moment came to mind when reading a paragraph from the 2014 Friendship Book recently. The author suggested that the coming of Spring is surely the world's best tonic for raising our spirits, and then quoted nineteenth-century nature writer, Richard Jefferies: "How happy the trees must be, to hear the song of the birds again in their branches! After the silence and leaflessness, to have the birds back once more and to feel them busy at nest-building; how glad to give them the moss and the fibres and the crutch of the boughs to build in."

So raise your spirits and give yourself a spring tonic, and when you are 'out and about' in the days ahead, please take time to notice the majesty of Nature in the colours of the flowers, to listen to the singing of the birds, and to think how happy the trees must be. What a wonderful broadcasting system of hope and a reminder that we do live in a beautiful world.

If you live in the White Rock, BC area perhaps you would like to join me at two local Hospice functions next month: Annual Hike for Hospice, Sunday, May 4, 9 a.m. - Noon, starting at Blackie Spit, Crescent Beach (or pre-register at www.whiterockhospice.org), and on Thursday evening, May 22, 7 - 8 p.m. the semi-annual peaceful Memorial service at Victory Memorial.

If I can offer you mentoring support for your journey, I hope you will call. I wish you a beautiful Easter time and the joys of Springtime.

Until next time...
